Granville County is situated northeast of Durham, snug against the Virginia state line. It was named after John Carteret, the Earl of Granville, who died in 1763.
The Town of Oxford is the county seat, and the downtown can boast of one of the most attractive courthouses in the state. The town was first incorporated in 1816 and was named after a large plantation in the area called "Oxford." Oxford is a picture-book small town, with stately homes and one of the most beautiful residential streets you'll find anywhere in College Avenue.
Like most of eastern North Carolina, tobacco and textiles were traditional industries, but an influx of modern industry is being lured to the area by vacant land and an excellent transportation system. Granville County is changing as it grabs its portion of the booming growth in the Triangle region.
Granville's transportation needs are served by Interstate-85, which runs through the southern portion of the county and gives residents a quick drive to Durham and the Research Triangle Park.
